Synthetic African Reed Thatch With the Character of Cape Reed
Cape reed thatch has crowned lodges, lapas and homes across southern Africa for generations, admired for its thick, softly rounded profile and the quiet elegance of classic African thatch. ONETHATCH REED recreates that look as synthetic Cape reed thatch: reed strands of varied lengths and tones are assembled on a reinforced plastic binder strip to form each panel, giving a full, naturally irregular surface that reads as real African reed thatch from close range and at a distance.
The Sundried blend layers warm yellow, light tan and chocolate hues, like freshly laid reed in the sun. Made from PVC-free, 100% recyclable HDPE in our own solar-powered factory, this synthetic thatch roofing suits safari lodges, beach clubs, tiki bars, gazebos and resort pavilions. Prefer a weathered, brown-grey roof? Choose ONETHATCH REED (AGED).
Highlights of ONETHATCH REED (SUNDRIED)
- Pre-assembled panels: each 1000 × 500 mm field panel is fixed with four stainless roofing screws, with eave, starter, field, and hip and ridge panels for every part of the roof. No thatching skills are required.
- Installed over a solid sub-deck, on a roof pitch of at least 18° (about 4:12); about 5 panels per m².
- Fire: the FR version is rated Class A to ASTM E108 (Intertek report 220927005SHF-001); the standard NFR version carries no fire rating.
- Weathering: passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering at Micom Laboratories, Canada (report MI-25-17428-1), with no significant colour change.
- Low maintenance: HDPE does not rot, and REED resists mould growth in ASTM G21 testing (Intertek).
- 20-year limited warranty on FR and NFR versions.
- Lead time: 30 days for a 40 ft container.

For the same look with far less upkeep. Natural reed is beautiful but demanding: a natural roof needs regular maintenance, fire-retardant treatment and, in time, re-thatching by a skilled thatcher. ONETHATCH REED keeps the look of African reed thatch in pre-assembled HDPE panels that a roofing contractor can fix, with no re-thatching cycle and a 20-year limited warranty.
It varies widely: a natural Cape reed roof needs ongoing maintenance and periodic re-thatching, and how long it lasts depends on climate, pitch and workmanship. ONETHATCH REED is made for long-term outdoor use: it carries a 20-year limited warranty on FR and NFR versions and passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering, though its actual service life also depends on exposure and installation.

Yes, in the FR version. ONETHATCH REED (SUNDRIED) FR is rated Class A to ASTM E108 (Intertek report 220927005SHF-001), so specify it for lodges, restaurants and any roof where the code or insurer asks for a fire-rated covering; the standard NFR version carries no fire rating.
