Synthetic Fan Palm Leaf Roofing for Palapas and Beach Bars
Fan palm thatch is a classic roof of the Caribbean and Central America, from backyard palapas in San José, Costa Rica, to beach clubs in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. ONETHATCH PALM (FAN) recreates that fuller, more rugged profile in artificial thatch that keeps its good looks: each panel is moulded from casts of real palm leaves in high-density polyethylene (HDPE), with the colour compounded through the material.
The flexible moulded binder strip follows gable, hip and pavilion roofs as well as open batten frames. The palm thatch panels are fixed with stainless roofing screws, so a handy homeowner can roof a backyard palapa and contractors can move quickly on resort work. Matching ridge and hip panels finish the roof neatly.
Built for Sun, Salt Air and Tropical Rain
- No solid deck or membrane needed when installed to specification: the panels go straight onto open battens.
- Fire: the FR version is rated Class A to ASTM E108 (Intertek report 220927005SHF-001); the standard NFR version carries no fire rating.
- Weathering: passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering at Micom Laboratories, Canada (report MI-25-17428-1), with no significant colour change.
- Low maintenance: HDPE does not rot or soak up rain, so there is no re-thatching cycle and none of the pest treatment natural thatch needs.
- 20-year limited warranty on FR and NFR versions.
- Lead time: made to order, under 7 days for 3,000 m².
Suited to tropical roofing in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and coastal regions around the world, ONETHATCH PALM (FAN) brings the easy-going spirit of the tropics to every roof it covers.

All three are ONETHATCH PALM panels of the same 980 × 670 mm size, fixed the same way. FAN gives the fuller, rugged look of fan palm thatching from Panama, Costa Rica and the island of Dominica; NIPA gives a neat, close-layered nipa-leaf roof; and RAINCAPE recreates the woven rain-cape texture of a Mexican palapa roof. Order free samples to compare them side by side.
Natural palm thatch is beautiful, but in tropical climates it usually needs re-thatching every few years, plus regular pest and fire-retardant treatment. ONETHATCH PALM (FAN) keeps the same layered palm look in artificial thatch that does not rot, needs only an occasional rinse and carries a 20-year limited warranty.
A minimum of 18° (about 4:12). Lay the courses at 220 mm (9 in) spacing, about 4.9 panels per m², and order around 10% extra for cutting. Installation guidelines come with every order.
It can be, when the whole roof is designed for it: in hurricane regions, the frame, batten spacing and fixings must be engineered for the wind loads at your site. FAN panels are fixed with stainless roofing screws through the moulded binder strip. Our published wind test is for the NIPA style in the same range, which showed no loss of attachment at 160 mph (260 km/h) in ASTM D3161 testing at PRI; that is a laboratory result, not a site design wind speed.
Yes. Samples are free. Order FAN, NIPA and RAINCAPE together to see which leaf shape suits your roof.
