Ryoanji-Gaki bamboo fence: a low diamond-lattice border
Note: please refer to the Additional information tab for synthetic bamboo fence specifications.
Our synthetic Ryoanji-Gaki bamboo fence is a Japanese-style bamboo fence for gentle boundaries: bamboo crossed on the diagonal forms an open diamond lattice that defines the space without closing it off. It is ideal for gardens, courtyards, pond edges, resorts, restaurants and architectural feature areas, wherever you want structure and a view at the same time.
Where the style comes from. Ryoanji-Gaki (龍安寺垣) is named after Ryoan-ji, the Zen temple in Kyoto, where it lines the main path through the temple grounds. Traditional versions use thick split bamboo crossed diagonally and stand roughly 45–90 cm high.
How we build it. Each panel is made in ASA synthetic bamboo, molded from real bamboo and colored with mineral pigments, on a powder-coated aluminum frame; the standard panel measures 2000 × 900 mm (width × height) and can be customized to order. This synthetic bamboo fence offers timeless Japanese design while resisting the splitting, rot and mold that make natural bamboo hard to keep, and it is virtually maintenance-free.
Faux bamboo fence advantages
- An open diamond lattice that marks the edge while ponds and planting stay in view
- Lightweight panels on powder-coated aluminum frames, easy to install with screwless connectors
- Natural bamboo texture in Sundried, our standard color; custom colors for commercial projects
- Color tested through 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering, with no significant color change
- Made to order in an ASTM E84 Class A fire-retardant version
- Fully recyclable, and backed by a 20-year limited warranty on the panels and aluminum frame (why choose ONETHATCH)
Ryoanji-Gaki is one of two Landscape Accent styles among our eight bamboo fence styles. Need upright poles instead of a lattice? See its partner, the Kinkakuji-Gaki path-edging fence, or pair a low border with the taller Katsura-Gaki screen.
The Diamond Lattice, Reimagined
Ryoanji-Gaki is the bamboo lattice fence of Japanese gardens: crossed bamboo forming an open diamond pattern that frames the view instead of hiding it. It offers the airy charm of a bamboo trellis or bamboo trellis fence. Like the square-grid four-eyed fence (yotsume-gaki), it stays open and light, but it is molded in ASA on an aluminum frame, so it resists the rot at the ties and the splitting in the sun that natural canes suffer.
Ryoanji-Gaki Fence FAQ
Ryoanji-Gaki is a low, see-through Japanese garden fence in which split bamboo crosses diagonally to form a diamond lattice. It is named after Ryoan-ji, a Zen temple in Kyoto, where it lines the main path. ONETHATCH builds it as faux bamboo fencing, with ASA synthetic bamboo on aluminum frames.
No: its open diamond lattice marks a boundary while the planting, pond or lawn behind it stays in view. That is why it suits pond edges, planting beds and courtyard borders.
Our standard Ryoanji-Gaki panel measures 2000 × 900 mm (width × height). It can be customized to order, so a lattice border can follow the line of your pond, path or planting bed.
A Ryoanji-Gaki fence is virtually maintenance-free. Routine maintenance is generally not required: inspect the fence once a year, clear soil splash and debris as needed, and trim planting back so leaves do not collect in the diamonds. The open lattice makes this quick, with no closed panels for dirt to hide behind.
It carries a 20-year limited warranty on the panels and the aluminum frame. Beside ponds and water features, where natural bamboo soon molds and rots, the ASA synthetic bamboo resists both, and it passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering with no significant color change. By the sea, ONETHATCH bamboo fencing at Banyan Tree Maldives (Kenninji-Gaki style), made in the same synthetic bamboo, had been in use for six years with no visible color change as of 2026.
