Otsu-Gaki bamboo fence: a woven Japanese screen
Note: please refer to the Additional information tab for synthetic bamboo fence specifications.
Some fences hide a view; the Otsu-Gaki bamboo fence from ONETHATCH® becomes the view. Bamboo poles are truly woven over and under the horizontal rails, just as in a traditional Otsu fence, building the rich, basket-weave texture of the classic woven bamboo fencing style seen in Kyoto gardens. It brings warmth and craft to Japanese gardens, Zen patios, resort dining terraces and spa landscapes, and it makes a handsome cover for air-conditioning units and service areas.
Where the style comes from. Otsu-Gaki (大津垣) is one of Japan’s woven fences; its name is said to come from the fences that lined the highway through Otsu, in today’s Shiga Prefecture, during the Edo period.
How we build it. Our faux bamboo fence panels are molded from real bamboo in ASA, a weather-resistant outdoor resin colored with mineral pigments, and mounted on powder-coated aluminum frames with wood-grain aluminum posts that join with screwless connectors. Unlike natural bamboo, ONETHATCH bamboo fences resist splitting, cracking, rot, mold and termites, so the weave stays crisp in humid, coastal and busy settings.
Panel sizes. The weave is made from bamboo poles, so the size is flexible: a standard Otsu-Gaki panel measures approximately 1900 mm high by 1800 mm wide. Our standard panel is the easiest route; if your terrace or equipment screen needs a different run, send us your layout and we can customize the panels to fit.

Otsu-Gaki Fence FAQ
Otsu-Gaki is a woven Japanese bamboo fence: bamboo passes over and under horizontal rails, giving a basket-weave texture. Its name is said to come from fences along the Edo-period highway through Otsu, in today’s Shiga Prefecture. ONETHATCH panels are truly woven the same way, in ASA synthetic bamboo on aluminum frames.
Yes: its woven face makes an attractive screen for air-conditioning units, pool pumps and service areas around villas, restaurants and resort buildings. Leave the clearance your equipment maker recommends, and ask our team to help plan the layout.
The woven Otsu-Gaki fence is virtually maintenance-free. Routine maintenance is generally not required: inspect the fence once a year and clear dust, leaves and debris from the weave as needed, especially where it screens air-conditioning units or pool equipment. The ASA synthetic bamboo resists the cracking, rot and mold that make natural woven bamboo hard to keep, and the fence is backed by a 20-year limited warranty.
The panels come on powder-coated aluminum frames that fix to wood-grain aluminum posts with a screwless connector, so assembly is straightforward. Two-way posts (square posts, installed on site), one-way posts (half posts, for prefabricated sections) and corner posts handle straight runs and turns.
