Synthetic Thatch Roofing Materials & Faux Bamboo: Your Questions, Answered
What are ONETHATCH products made of?
ONETHATCH products are made from high-performance synthetic materials, each chosen for its job: HDPE for synthetic thatch and woven matting, ASA resin for synthetic bamboo, aluminum for aluminum bamboo and recycled resin for our tiki torches. Our PALM, REED and STRAW thatch is UV-stabilized, PVC-free and 100% recyclable, woven matting is made from 13 mm HDPE strands, and our synthetic bamboo poles, panels, pelupuh and fencing are molded from real bamboo, with the fencing panels set in powder-coated aluminum frames.
Why choose synthetic thatch and bamboo over natural materials?
Synthetic thatch and bamboo give you the beauty of natural materials without their upkeep. Outdoors, natural thatch and bamboo fade, rot, split and attract insects, and they need regular re-thatching, sealing and fire treatment. ONETHATCH PALM faux thatch is molded from casts of real palm leaves, and our synthetic bamboo poles, panels and fencing from real bamboo, so the texture is authentic. Both are backed by independent test reports and a 20-year limited warranty: a look you choose once, free of the endless cycle of re-thatching and re-sealing.
Are ONETHATCH products fire resistant?
Yes, in their fire-retardant (FR) versions, and aluminum bamboo is non-combustible. FR PALM and FR REED thatch are rated Class A to ASTM E108 (Intertek report 220927005SHF-001). FR synthetic bamboo and FR woven matting, available to order, are rated Class A to ASTM E84, and the FR matting has also passed NFPA 286. Aluminum bamboo complies with ASTM E84 Class A without a special version. Standard (NFR) thatch, bamboo and matting carry no fire rating, so share your fire code and we will recommend the right version and send the test reports.
How does ONETHATCH PALM thatch perform in strong wind and heavy rain?
ONETHATCH PALM (NIPA) showed no loss of attachment at 160 mph (260 km/h) in ASTM D3161 testing and passed the Florida TAS 100 wind-driven rain test, both at PRI Construction Materials Technologies (reports 2756T0002.1 and 2756T0003.1). These are laboratory results for PALM installed to our specifications with stainless roofing screws, not a site design wind speed, so your roof frame, battens and fixings must still be designed for local wind loads. For REED and STRAW roofs, send us your project location and we will advise. See ONETHATCH PALM for the full specification.
Will ONETHATCH fade in the sun?
ONETHATCH is made to hold its color. Our synthetic thatch, synthetic bamboo poles, panels and fencing, and woven matting passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 testing at Micom Laboratories, an independent Canadian laboratory, with no significant color change (report MI-25-17428-1). In our thatch and synthetic bamboo, the base color runs all the way through the material rather than sitting on the surface, and in the field our synthetic bamboo fence at Banyan Tree Maldives had been in use for six years with no visible color change as of 2026.
Can ONETHATCH rot, grow mold or attract pests?
No, ONETHATCH does not rot or attract pests. Our thatch, synthetic bamboo and woven matting are synthetic resins with no plant fiber, so they are free from the rot and insect damage that natural thatch and cane suffer. PALM (NIPA) and REED thatch are also mold-resistant in ASTM G21 testing (Intertek). No pest sprays and no rotten leaves to replace, season after season.
Can I use ONETHATCH outdoors, by the pool or near the ocean?
Yes. ONETHATCH synthetic thatch and synthetic bamboo poles, panels and fencing are made for outdoor use, and the HDPE in our thatch is highly resistant to pool chlorine and salt air, which makes it at home on overwater villas, pool bars and beachfront resorts. Woven matting is for walls, ceilings and bar fronts, indoors or in covered outdoor areas. Synthetic bamboo is decorative, not load-bearing: it dresses posts, walls and ceilings built on a separate structural frame.
What is the lifespan of ONETHATCH products?
ONETHATCH is made for long outdoor service, and the clearest measure is the warranty: our synthetic thatch, synthetic bamboo poles, panels, pelupuh and fencing, and woven matting carry a 20-year limited warranty, while aluminum bamboo and torches have their own terms (see the warranty question below). Actual service life depends on climate, sun exposure and installation.
How long is the ONETHATCH warranty, and how do I register?
It depends on the product line. ONETHATCH synthetic thatch, synthetic bamboo poles, panels and pelupuh, bamboo fencing (panels and aluminum frame) and woven matting carry a 20-year limited warranty. Aluminum bamboo carries a 6-year warranty on the standard coating and 10 years on the premium coating, and bamboo torches carry 3 years. See what each warranty covers, and register your product within 30 days of installation, on our warranty page.
Do ONETHATCH products need maintenance or protective treatments?
Very little maintenance, and no protective treatments or sprays. Nothing needs re-thatching, sealing, staining or spraying for pests, and the FR versions never need fire-retardant re-treatment, since the retardant is part of the material itself. A thatch roof needs only an occasional rinse to clear dust and leaves, and synthetic bamboo is virtually maintenance-free: a yearly check and a quick clean of any dirt or debris is all it asks.
Are ONETHATCH products easy to install?
Yes, and no thatching skills are needed. ONETHATCH PALM panels screw onto battens with stainless roofing screws and need no solid deck or membrane when installed to specification. REED and STRAW fix over a solid sub-deck, and PALM and REED need a roof pitch of at least 18° (about 4:12). Threaded bamboo poles screw together in 508 mm (20 in) sections, and woven matting is glued to a backing board and stapled. Installation guidelines come with every thatch order; see our PALM (NIPA) installation guide and bamboo matting installation guide.
Can I get samples before I order?
Yes, samples are free. Let us know which products and colors are on your shortlist, and we will send samples so you can see and feel the texture before you order. Request your samples.
Can ONETHATCH provide customized solutions for my project?
Yes. Our in-house mold shop designs and CNC-machines custom molds for ONETHATCH PALM. Bamboo fencing, woven matting and aluminum bamboo can be made to sizes from your design, and custom colors are available for commercial projects. Send us a photo, a color reference or a drawing, and see how our customization service takes an idea from the first sketch to mass production.
How do I get a quote for my project?
Send us your drawings or photos, the project location and the area in m² or sq ft, even if some details are still open, and we will prepare a quote for your project. The quote depends mainly on the product and style, the standard or FR version, and the quantity; for thatch roofs, our engineer works out the panel count from your drawing. Start with our commercial inquiry form.
