Synthetic Bamboo Matting for Interior Wall & Ceiling Covering

Make the ceiling part of the design. ONETHATCH® synthetic bamboo matting brings the warmth of a handwoven finish to homes, resorts, tiki bars and commercial spaces. Artificial bamboo strips, 13 mm wide, are interlaced in a diagonal zigzag pattern, the traditional basket weave pattern of tropical matting, creating texture that works across ceilings, feature walls and bar fronts.

Also known as faux bamboo weave sheets, synthetic wicker matting, tropical matting or bamboo wall covering, this durable HDPE weave pairs a realistic appearance with easy installation and no staining, sealing or pest treatment.

Sheets, Rolls and Weaves

The 4 × 8 sheet. Our bamboo matting 4' x 8' sheet measures 1.22 × 2.44 m and covers 3.0 m² (32 sq ft) at only 5.1 kg (11.2 lb), light enough for one installer, whether it is a woven bamboo mat for wall or ceiling. These woven bamboo matting sheets are the standard format for walls, ceilings and bar fronts, and bamboo matting 4x8 matches the plywood boards it is fixed to. Specifiers may call it an artificial bamboo weave sheet or a plastic rattan woven sheet; on site it is simply the bamboo sheet for wall and ceiling work.

Rolled matting for large projects. For a resort, a theme park or a long run of bar fronts, rolled matting in 1220 mm × 50 m covers 61 m² (656 sq ft) per roll with far fewer joints. We make these bamboo matting rolls for walls & ceilings to order, and every bamboo weave matting roll keeps the same 1.22 m width as the sheets.

Woven flexible mats, not rigid boards. The sheets bend, cut with scissors once the cut line is sealed, and follow a curved bar front, then become rigid once glued to their backing board. Each one is a synthetic bamboo woven mat, so it does not split the way natural cane does.

The weave. Our standard is bamboo matting woven from 13 mm strands in diagonal zigzag patterns, the classic bamboo weave matting of the tropics. Natural matting comes in many more weaves, from fine weave matting and bamboo wide weave to double weave bamboo matting, herringbone weave matting, open hexagonal weaves and the bandeau weave. For larger projects we can develop custom woven patterns, colors and textures to match a design.

Colors. Teak and Carbonized are stocked for orders under 500 m², and Walnut, Ebony and Golden Oak complete the range. A carbonized bamboo mat brings the deep, smoky tone of heat-treated cane to a ceiling, without the cane.

Trim to finish. Edge every sheet with our split half-round poles: a bamboo cap molding along the top of a wainscot, a frame around a bar front, or faux bamboo molding that outlines a ceiling coffer.

How to Install Tropical Matting

Our woven mat is a synthetic bamboo lining, not a structural board: a surface lining that always goes onto a backing board, whether you are hanging bamboo mats for walls or for ceilings. The same five steps work on walls, ceilings and bar fronts.

  1. Prepare the backing. Fix a suitable backing board such as 4–6 mm plywood to the wall, the ceiling joists or the bar frame.
  2. Mark and cut. Mark the cut line, run an electric welder along it to seal the strands, then cut with scissors.
  3. Glue. Coat the back of the sheet with contact cement and press it firmly onto the board.
  4. Staple. Add a staple every 30 cm (12 in) in each direction.
  5. Finish the edges. Cover the edges and joints with half-round trim for clean, finished lines.

Ready-made panels. The sheets can also be laminated to plywood in the workshop first. The result is a set of bamboo matting panels: artificial bamboo woven ceiling panels that go up like any board, bamboo woven wall panels for a corridor, or HDPE bamboo wall panels for a fast fit-out on site. Each finished bamboo woven panel is light, rigid and ready to fix.

For photos of every step, read our guide on how to install synthetic bamboo matting.

Synthetic Bamboo Matting & Tropical Matting

Give a ceiling or feature wall a handwoven character that changes the feel of the room. ONETHATCH Woven Mat brings the texture of bamboo weave to resorts, restaurants and tropical interiors in a durable HDPE finish. Coordinate it with the lighting, bamboo trims and surrounding materials to complete the space.

Carry a woven bamboo theme through a hospitality space or covered outdoor area. Pair ONETHATCH® synthetic bamboo matting with synthetic bamboo poles and trims to connect ceilings, walls and tiki bar fronts in one coordinated design.

ONETHATCH® bamboo matting for ceilings and walls is supplied in standard 1.22 × 2.44 m sheets. For orders under 500 m², Teak and Carbonized are the stocked colors and sheets are the standard format. Custom-cut lengths retain the 1.22 m width; rolls are intended for large projects.

Install the matting on a suitable backing board, such as 4–6 mm plywood, following the installation guide. It works as a decorative finish for walls, ceilings, bar fronts and vertical furniture faces.

The durable HDPE weave carries a 20-year limited warranty against rot, delamination of the woven strands, UV degradation and, in the first 10 years, base-color fading. For rigid bamboo wall paneling instead of a flexible mat, see our bamboo wall panels.

Where Woven Matting Works Best

Ceilings. A bamboo matting ceiling is the classic tropical ceiling cover: warm, textured and light enough to fix overhead. It suits resort lobbies, restaurants and verandas, and it is the woven finish of choice for bamboo ceiling treatments in coffers and between exposed beams.

Walls and wainscots. Whether you picture a bamboo mat wall panel behind a reception desk or woven bamboo wall covering panels down a corridor, bamboo matting for walls turns a plain partition into a woven bamboo wall. Run a bamboo mat wall covering along the lower third of a room, cap it with trim, and the space gains a handcrafted rhythm.

Tiki bars and cabanas. The tiki bar wall covering that started it all, now built to last: line the back bar, face the counter of a covered bar as an outdoor bar panel and dress the ceiling with a tiki bar matting roll. As a tiki bamboo wall covering it pairs naturally with thatch for complete tiki bar palapa decor; as a tiki wall covering or cabana wall covering it is the tropical decor for tiki bars that stays fresh under a poolside canopy. Looking for tiki bar wall coverings for sale? Ours ship to more than 80 countries.

Hotels, restaurants and spas. As a commercial grade tropical bamboo wall covering, the weave carries one theme through lobby, corridor and guest room, the fake bamboo woven wall covering designers reach for where natural cane cannot cope. Our tropical wall covering is also installed at Kuda Rah Resort in the Maldives, alongside our synthetic thatch roofs. For corridors that need a fire resistant synthetic bamboo mat, specify the FR version, rated ASTM E84 Class A and made to order.

From island bars to izakaya. The same weave brings the woven ceilings of a Japanese izakaya, the patterned walls of a heritage majlis or the warmth of a Balinese villa into an interior.

Under pergolas and covered patios. Beneath a pergola with a glass or polycarbonate roof, or on the ceiling of a covered patio or porch, the mat adds a woven, shade-like finish that humidity and sea air do not spoil.

Furniture faces. Cabinet doors, headboards and reception desks take woven bamboo panels as inlays, the same way designers use wicker woven wall panels.

Bamboo wall covering ideas. A feature wall behind a bar, a wainscot capped with half-round trim, a ceiling coffer framed in poles, or a headboard wall in a beach villa: each takes only a few sheets.

Woven HDPE vs Natural Mats, Plastic Weaves and Wallpaper

Among woven wall and ceiling coverings, here is how ours compares.

Natural mats. Lauhala, bamboo, woven grass mats and woven palm leaf mats are beautiful on day one. Sold as a lauhala matting roll or by the sheet, they absorb moisture, invite mold and insects, and fade and stain within a few seasons, especially by the sea. Even a wide weave lauhala matting needs sealing to slow it down. Artificial woven bamboo matting keeps the look with far less upkeep.

Plastic and PVC weaves. A plastic artificial bamboo woven mat may be made of PVC. Ours is virgin HDPE with no PVC and no filler, so it stays tough and flexible, and it passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 weathering.

Synthetic rattan and wicker. Synthetic rattan weave belongs to the same family of HDPE wicker, and buyers often ask for a synthetic rattan mat, a synthetic rattan weaving mat or a synthetic rattan weaving sheet. Ours is woven specifically for walls and ceilings, with a tested weathering record; laminated to plywood, it becomes a rattan weave ceiling panel or one of the synthetic wicker rattan panels designers use on furniture. Where a code calls for fire resistant woven matting, specify our fire retardant synthetic rattan ceiling mat: the FR version, rated ASTM E84 Class A and passed NFPA 286, made to order.

Printed wallpaper. A synthetic woven bamboo wallpaper or a printed panel shows a photograph of a weave. Woven bamboo-style matting has real depth: strands you can see and feel, catching the light.

Bamboo skin boards. A bamboo skin board or artificial bamboo skin panel glues a thin layer to a board, and in humid rooms that layer can lift. Our 20-year limited warranty covers delamination of the woven strands.

Rigid bamboo panels. For rigid bamboo wall panels for sale with the rounded depth of poles, or bamboo ceiling panels for sale with a sculpted profile, choose our molded panels; for a flat, woven texture, choose matting.

Warranty and Care

Every ONETHATCH woven mat is covered by our 20-year limited warranty, covering rot, delamination of the woven strands, UV degradation and, in the first 10 years, base-color fading, subject to the warranty terms. Register your matting warranty.

Our synthetic bamboo mats need very little care: wipe or rinse with fresh water and a mild soap, using a soft brush for the weave. There is nothing to stain, seal or varnish. In covered outdoor areas by the sea, a rinse now and then keeps salt from building up.

Bamboo Matting FAQs

What is synthetic bamboo matting made from?

ONETHATCH Woven Mat is woven from 13 mm HDPE fibre strips that copy the look of natural bamboo matting, which is why buyers also call it a plastic bamboo mat. It contains no PVC and is recyclable.

Is it the same as lauhala matting, bac bac matting or bamboo wallpaper?

No. Lauhala and bac bac are two natural types of tropical matting, woven from pandanus leaves and banana bark, and sawali (amakan) is woven split bamboo from the Philippines. ONETHATCH Woven Mat is a synthetic tropical matting alternative: a bamboo-look HDPE weave that is highly mold, rot and insect resistant and needs no staining or sealing.

It is not a wallpaper either: ONETHATCH Woven Mat is a woven HDPE sheet fixed to a backing board, with the layered texture of a natural weave.

Is it the same as synthetic rattan or wicker wall panels?

Close. ONETHATCH Woven Mat is woven from HDPE synthetic wicker, the same family of material as synthetic rattan, but in a bamboo-style weave of 13 mm strands supplied as flexible 4 × 8 ft sheets rather than framed wicker panels. Fixed to a backing board, it lines a ceiling the way a plastic rattan ceiling mat would or faces a wall like a wicker woven wall panel. For projects that need a fire rating, a fire-retardant synthetic rattan-style ceiling mat is available to order: the FR version is rated ASTM E84 Class A and has passed NFPA 286.

How do you install bamboo matting on walls and ceilings?

Mark the cut line and run an electric welder along it to seal the strands, then cut with scissors. Coat the back with contact cement, press the sheet onto a suitable backing board such as 4–6 mm plywood, and add a staple every 30 cm (12 in) in each direction. The same method works on walls and bar fronts.

It works as a woven ceiling treatment or a bamboo wall covering for feature walls, bar fronts and vertical furniture faces. See how to install synthetic bamboo matting.

Can synthetic bamboo matting be used outdoors?

Yes. As an outdoor bamboo mat it suits covered areas such as patios, porches, palapas and tiki bar canopies. The HDPE weave passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering and is highly mold, rot and insect resistant. Unlike natural tropical matting, it does not soak up water or salty sea air, so salt and dirt wipe off instead of staining it, even at beachfront villas and resorts.

Do you supply bamboo matting rolls or sheets, and how much do I need?

Standard supply is 4 × 8 ft (1.22 × 2.44 m) sheets, or custom-cut lengths at the 1.22 m width. Rolls are available for large projects.

Divide the area by the coverage: a 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft (3.0 m²) and a 1220 mm × 50 m roll covers 656 sq ft (61 m²). A 12 × 16 ft ceiling (192 sq ft) takes 6 sheets before an allowance for cutting. Send us your plan and we’ll check the quantity with your quote.

Do you supply bamboo matting wholesale?

Yes. As the factory behind ONETHATCH, we are a direct supplier of artificial bamboo matting to distributors, contractors and resort buyers, from a few 4×8 sheets to wholesale bulk orders. Teak and Carbonized sheets are held in stock in China for orders under 500 m² and are ready to ship; Walnut, Ebony, Golden Oak and bamboo matting rolls (1220 mm × 50 m) are made to order in 7–14 days. Tell us your quantity and destination port, whether you are in the USA, the UK, Australia or Dubai, and we will quote wholesale prices for your bamboo matting with sea or air freight.

Is fire-retardant bamboo matting available?

Yes. A fire-retardant version is available to order. It is rated ASTM E84 Class A and has passed NFPA 286, the room-corner fire test US building codes use for plastic wall and ceiling finishes such as HDPE. Specify it when you request a quote, and confirm your project’s requirements with your designer or code official.

What is bamboo matting?

Bamboo matting is a woven sheet of split cane used to line walls and ceilings. ONETHATCH makes it in HDPE: the same woven look, built for humidity, sun and salt air.

Can bamboo matting be used on walls and ceilings?

Yes, that is what it is made for: walls, ceilings, bar fronts and vertical furniture faces, indoors and in covered outdoor areas, always fixed to a backing board. It is not made for floors or countertops.

Can the size and color be customized?

Yes. Sheets can be cut to custom lengths at the 1.22 m width, and larger projects can specify custom colors, textures and woven patterns.

What is lauhala matting?

Lauhala matting is woven by hand from the leaves of the hala (pandanus) tree, the traditional tiki bar finish of Hawaii and the Pacific. ONETHATCH Woven Mat gives a similar woven look in HDPE that does not absorb moisture.

How do I install lauhala matting on a wall?

Natural lauhala is glued or stapled to a backing board, and ours installs the same way: contact cement on the back and a staple every 30 cm (12 in), with no sealing afterwards. The full steps are in the Installation tab.

What is the difference between matting and rigid bamboo panels?

Matting is a flexible woven sheet that needs a backing board; laminated to plywood, it becomes an artificial bamboo woven panel with a flat woven texture. Rigid bamboo panels are molded boards with the rounded depth of poles that screw straight to battens.

Is your artificial bamboo matting for sale by the sheet?

Yes. Our tropical matting for sale comes by the sheet, and every bamboo matting roll for sale is made to order for large projects. As artificial bamboo matting suppliers with our own factory, and bamboo matting roll suppliers to resorts and theme parks, we make every sheet and roll we sell.

Where to buy bamboo matting rolls in bulk?

Directly from the synthetic bamboo matting manufacturer. ONETHATCH has made synthetic bamboo since 1996 and ships to more than 80 countries, so distributors, contractors and resort buyers source tropical matting rolls and sheets straight from us, with samples first.

What is the bamboo mat ceiling price?

We quote every bamboo ceiling price on your area, color and quantity rather than one fixed figure. Send us your plan for a quote; if you are weighing a bamboo ceiling panels price against matting, we can quote both.

Do you work with bamboo matting wholesale distributors?

Yes. We quote bamboo matting wholesale prices to distributors and contractors worldwide. When you compare bamboo matting wholesale suppliers, ask for the weathering report: ours passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 testing.

We strive for excellence, quality and aesthetics are never compromised.
