Landscaping Ideas Using Bamboo Poles, Fencing, Panels and Thatch
Use fencing to frame and screen, poles to add height, panels to dress walls, and thatch to crown the shade structures. Here is how each works in a landscape plan.
Frame and screen with Japanese bamboo fencing
Our synthetic bamboo fencing recreates ten classic Japanese garden styles in three collections. Tall privacy screens such as Kenninji-Gaki, Katsura-Gaki and Tokusa-Gaki hide service areas and create secluded pool corners, while low Kinkakuji-Gaki and Ryoanji-Gaki borders define walkways and planting beds without blocking the view. The standard privacy panel is about 1900 mm high by 1800 mm wide on a powder-coated aluminum frame, and we customise panels to your layout. Browse the Japanese bamboo fencing styles or read our Japanese fence styles and tips.
Add height and rhythm with bamboo poles
Poles give a garden its vertical lines: pergola details, fencing infill, column wraps and entrance features. Our threaded poles come in 508 mm (20-inch) sections that screw together to the height your design needs, stocked in 40, 50 and 75 mm diameters in Sundried, and one-length poles run up to 6 m. They are decorative, so for a post that must carry weight, a metal tube goes inside the pole. See the threaded artificial bamboo pole for full specs.
Dress walls and bar fronts with bamboo panels
Garden walls, outdoor bars and pavilion fronts come alive with our half-round bamboo wall panel and bamboo slat wall panel, made for indoor and outdoor use. Under a roof, our Woven Mat adds a warm, handwoven wicker texture to walls, ceilings and bar fronts in covered outdoor areas.
Crown shade structures with synthetic thatch
Palapas, tiki bars and cabanas are the heart of a tropical landscape. ONETHATCH PALM (NIPA) fixes to open battens with stainless roofing screws and sheds rain without a sub-deck when installed to specification, while our REED and STRAW styles go over a solid, waterproofed sub-deck. Our guide to covering an outdoor tiki hut walks through the build.
How Do Synthetic Bamboo and Thatch Hold Up Outdoors?
They are built for sun and rain, and the results are tested. Both our synthetic thatch and our synthetic bamboo passed 5,000 hours of ASTM G155 accelerated weathering at Micom Laboratories (Canada) with no significant colour change, and both carry a 20-year limited warranty.
Care is simple: no re-thatching, sealing, staining or pest treatments, just an occasional rinse and inspection. Where fire codes apply, the FR versions of our PALM, REED and STRAW thatch are rated Class A to ASTM E108, and an FR version of our poles and panels is available to order, rated Class A to ASTM E84. Standard versions carry no fire rating.
Planning Your Landscape: Three Questions to Ask First
Will anything be walked on or carry weight?
Choose by surface and load. Our synthetic bamboo is decorative, not load-bearing, so a post that carries weight takes a metal tube inside; Woven Mat belongs on walls, ceilings and vertical faces only, never underfoot.
Is there a fire requirement on site?
If the project needs a fire rating, specify FR thatch or FR poles and panels from the start, since standard stock, including our fencing, carries no fire rating.
Which colours tie the scheme together?
Sundried, the standard fence colour and the stocked tone of our threaded poles, is a warm, sun-bleached gold that sits naturally beside palm and reed thatch. Order samples to see them together in your own light.
